Benny Binion, mobster and poker enthusiast created the Poker Hall of Fame in 1979, long before online poker sites. One of the things that Benny Binion was known for was the creative methods that he would use to promote his casino. The Poker Hall of Fame was created with the overall goal of remembering the legendary names and legacies in the game of poker. The Poker Hall of Fame is located in Las Vegas, Nevada.
People Inducted Into The Poker Hall of Fame
As of 2012, there have been 42 people who have been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. As of 2012, only 18 of those on the list are still alive.
The Five Requirements To Be Inducted
- The gambler has to have played against the best poker players
- The gambler has to have played high stakes games
- The player has to demonstrate skill regularly and gain the respect of peers
- Be good at poker for a long period of time
- Non-players have to have done something to help the game of poker move forward
A Sixth Requirement Added
In 2009, Tom Dwan a major Internet poker player was nearly inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame at age 23. However, in 2011, an age requirement that stated you have to be 40 years or older was added. Unfortunately, this eliminated certain players like Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu who were regularly nominated for the honor.
